Difficult weather conditions resulted in reduced fleet, but attracted the addition of Adix to the Pendennis Cup. On day 2, yachts competing included Altair, Mariette, Adix and Lutine providing a great spectacle for Falmouth. On the way out of the harbour the yachts passed a barge carrying the new rig for Velsheda and there are rumours that she will join the Champagne Race on Saturday.

The Start
With strong winds, all the yachts had reduced sails for the start. Altair arrived very early on the line and was first over but was downwind from Mariette, who commanded the best position for the windward leg. Lutine was third over followed by Adix handicapped by a damaged foretopsail, a couple of boat lengths behind.

Altair was first to tack but Mariette’s starting position put her in a stronger tactical position. Lutine held her ground well on the first leg against the big three.

Mariette was first round the mark followed by Altair, Adix and Lutine. With gusts over 30 knts the downwind leg promised to be an interesting challenge.

The downwind leg
Mariette sailed goosewing, shortly after rounding the mark followed by Altair. Adix selected an upwind course looking to gybe across the lead two yachts towards the channel mark. The sea state and wind strength proved difficult for the yachts and half way towards the channel mark, Mariette broke the foremast gaff and was forced to retire.

The three remaining yachts battled through the tough breezy conditions to reach the windward mark. The Race Committee took the decision to shorten the course with the finish opposite Rosemullion Head.

Altair sailed a superb race to come home first followed by Adix and Lutine.

Back in the marina, the day finished with a gun salute from Adix in Port Pendennis Marina and cheers for the Race Committee who had endured difficult conditions on the water in the Rustler 42.
